So in Oath, we've been working on this plan for ages. And I've been thinking about it, and weighing various ways to implement it, and think it's pretty good. Today, I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] ilhander about the differences between my current Oath character and my previous one, and said something like "for instance, [the old character] would have looked at the plan and said 'you realize foo is a problem, right?'" And we both sort of stopped, and looked at it, and said huh, looks like foo is a problem.

It hadn't occurred to me at all as my new character. As my old character, I spotted it in 30 seconds. I knew they didn't think alike, but I didn't realize *I* don't think alike, depending on which one I'm playing.

Fortunately, the NPCs are likely to point foo out to someone soon, the GMs tell me, so I don't have to worry about breaking character to mention it.

i've noticed things like that while LARPing. It's wacky and amusing.

I've done this in real life, too.

"Well, this looks OK to me, but you should get Mark to look it over because he'll probably spot things like this error over here." (blink)

"So, this makes no sense... it does X, and Y, and Z, instead of Z'. Of course, you're going to tell me that it _should_ do Z, but _that's_ only true if A = 5, which... it does." (delete delete delete)

That sort of thing.

Very embarassing.

It's not unusual for me to figure things out by imagining what other people would do or think.

That's cool, being able to think of different things depending on who you are, as well as being able to switch. Or conversely, having real blinders on depending on who you are. :-)

Yay for not having to break character. :)

Many years ago (ack!) in a run whose name currently escapes me, we had a conversation with interesting new NPC Z, after which I commented to the party, "You realize, of course, that he's the father of NPC Y?"

Nobody else had even an inkling of that (which was true!), and I had no idea how I knew that (nor did the GM!), though I'm positive I would never have thought of it out-of-character. When the PC who was my character's daughter asked how I knew, I told her that's she'd understand when she had kids of her own. ;)

This wasn't Mara was it? Cause if so, I do have kids of my own and I still don't understand.

Your kids are better-behaved than Mara.

Hey now...

Just remember, 'a bad plan now is better than now plan later.' Planning is boring. :)

Ah, but does your character have kids? :)

(No, she doesn't. She does have an overprotective father, which sort of prevents her even forming attachments that could lead to kids. ;)

All right, now I'm going to be unable not to obsessively speculate about which plan and which problem. You'd better mention it to me if Ciernan ever finds out. :) :)

(Of course Maury's actually around these days...but hasn't been in on all the briefings. :) )

Argh. Now I'm speculating about it, too.
