California Dreaming
Aug. 27th, 2006 09:18 pmWell, I spent most of today napping, so maybe I'm tired. I guess we did go to the beach for a bit. Anyway, to my week:
Monday: Comet Run, also ran too late. None of the individual fights were terribly challenging, really, but as a series they did start to wear down the party. It was mostly the same fight four times, and it was interesting to see them make progressively better use of the terrain.
Tuesday: Tarkanan was canceled, so got home early, worked on Centauri for a while, and went to sleep. I think. I know I did that, but did I do anything before hand? I don't know.
Wednesday: Was supposed to go to a concert or something with a couple of people from work, but one of them lost their ticket, so I gave mine to her and just went to the pre-show-dinner, and then went to the Centauri meeting. More what I wanted to do anyway, really. They were starting to build stuff in the EC Courtyard for Rush, but I'm not going to be there for Rush, so I didn't look too closely.
Thursday: Ryuna went fairly well, as we dared the Vampire Lord to come find us and kill us. Hopefully, he'll send waves of minions for a while before actually coming himself, since he'd kill us DEADDEADDEAD if we ran into him now.
Friday: Flew to California. Left a bunch of stuff on the desk for the office manager with directions "do this with this one, do that with that one" because I hate production. But overall, most things were sufficiently under control at work that I don't feel like I left stuff hanging. Dinner with the family when I got here, and my niece and nephew were unaccountably pleased to see me. :-)
Saturday: Took Niece and Nephew down to the Golden Gate Park, with my sister. Walked around the Tea Garden and the Botanical Gardens, which was fun, until we didn't know how to get out of the Botanical Gardens (by which I mean, I let my sister and Niece say "we should go that way" when I thought we should go the other way), and spent an extra half hour wandering around, during which I had to carry Nephew for most of it. Ah well. Then dinner with
countertorque and family,
izmirian,
merastra and
ricedog. Then back to countertorque's place to play Power Grid (with the guys from dinner, plus Blackfire and my brother), a fun German-ish game I hadn't played before. Ended up going to bed at like 1 in the morning CA time, which is the easy way to shift time zones, right?
Sunday: Went to the beach with brother's family, sister, and dad. It wasn't bad, but the undertow is way strong. I wouldn't feel comfortable actually swimming there, and no one else seemed to be either, really. Pretty cool waves, though. Then back to the house for a lazy evening, instead of looking people up to play more games. Probably an error, since they'll switch to working-folks schedules for the rest of the week, but oh well, I seem to have needed the rest.
In other news, finished re-reading The Dark is Rising series. It's still good, although perhaps a little more period than I'd realized when I read it originally (when it wasn't period, 'cause they were recently written). I do still think the last book is the weakest, and think I have an actual answer for why, now - the rest of the series is nicely balanced between the weirdshit and the day-to-day "real life" stuff, where the last book nearly totally abandons the real life stuff. The bits that touch on the real life stuff are the strongest parts of it, but it just spends too long wandering about in magic-land. Reading it straight through as a grownup, I did notice more ties back-and-forth between the books than I remember noticing as a kid, though. Also: Does anyone who's read it know who the Lady is supposed to be? She totally feels like I should be recognizing her as someone, but the best guess I can come up with is the Lady of the Lake, and that doesn't feel right. Lives 10 days of game, but possibly just because I liked it so much as a kid.
