Have a little cake with your icing?

Let's see, what have I done. Mostly, VaticanVaticanVatican. It's coming, but it's slower than I'd like.
Other than that, there was my birthday party last saturday. Brokeback Mountain, which was quite good, but not as totally cool as I'd hoped. I did feel for Jack a lot. I had less sympathy for Ennis - I understood Ennis, but he's less like me. I saw a review somewhere that says that Jack is the actually gay one, and Ennis is the straight-guy-stand-in, and I think there's a lot of truth to that. Ennis is in love with Jack, and that's not what he wanted or expected, and he doesn't know how to deal. Jack knows he wants guys, and he understands how to deal with being in love with Ennis. Still, despite saying that, I thought both of them did a very good job, as did the rest of the characters. Lives 9.5 days of game. After the movie, we did dinner at Bombay Cafe, with twenty people plus me, which earned me a couple of comments about knowing too many people who like me. :-) It also featured the special guest star College Roommate, who had called the day before to complain that he was stuck in Boston for a surprise conference, and would I entertain him. I hadn't seen him since the wedding, a year and a half ago, so it was really nice to see him. And then back to my place for lounging about, and not enough feeding of cake to other people, and distribution of christmas presents. All good.
And there was some stuff at work, I guess. I actually felt like a lawyer on Monday, as I went to trial and argued before the judge and new what I was talking about, and was clearly more experienced than the other lawyer. It still hardly ever happens that I'm the experienced one in court - I just don't go in often enough to really develop the proper ease there - and it was really nice to be the one who was more on top of things for once. (Not so much in the facts of the specific case - I can handle those - but in terms of knowing where the clerk's office was and who to talk to there and things like that.) Of course, to balance that out, there's that case that no one will call me back on, so we're not filing the thing that needs to be filed. Sigh. But my boss finished his seven week trial today with a hung jury, so he'll be back in the office soon, and we'll figure out what's going to happen with the other thing, hopefully.
