Play Non-Reviews
Apr. 23rd, 2005 03:33 pmBeen to three plays in the last week. I'm not going to review any of them seriously, because I'm tired, but a few random thoughts, so I'll remember them next year.
Company (MTG) was fun, and funny. The couples seemed far less disfunctional than they were in the professional production I saw recently, which interested me. The words were all the same, but the changes in body language made several scenes less vicious.
Carousel (Harvard) remains a troublesome play. It covers too much time, has a terribly un-modern attitude towards domestic violence, and the two lovers only get about a scene and a half together. Still, the music is good, and there were several funny scenes, even if they didn't seem to string together quite right.
Living Out (Lyric) was far too obviously a "message" play. It was trying to make various political statements, more than tell a story. It still managed to tell an ok story, but only ok, with some scenes that worked and some that didn't. I mostly enjoyed the interactions between the two main characters, until the final conversation, but the conversations among the nannies, and among the mothers, didn't do much for me at all, and the interactions with the husbands were on and off.
Now to go see if my angels are here. Sometime soon, I need a break.
